Reference verifier: catch fake or hallucinated citations before your marker does
Paste your reference list. We check each one against CrossRef (over 130 million publications) and flag fake, hallucinated, or unverifiable sources before you submit.
Up to 40 references per check. Rate limit: 20 checks per hour.
How the reference verifier works
Every reference you paste is matched against CrossRef, an index of over 130 million academic publications including journals, conference papers, and books with DOIs. We extract a plausible title and year from each reference, query CrossRef's bibliographic search, and measure how closely the top hit matches your input.
A reference is verified when the top match exceeds a similarity threshold. A reference is flagged as not found when no credible match exists - a common pattern for AI-hallucinated citations, and worth a manual check. A reference is unparseable when no title or year could be extracted.
CrossRef does not cover every publication (non-DOI books, preprints, and some older journals may be missed). A "not found" result is a red flag, not a conviction. Always double-check manually.
Check your whole assignment before you submit
Rubrica reads your brief, rubric, and assignment - then gives you criterion-by-criterion feedback plus a citation cross-reference check.
