Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing those products, then dividing by the total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course gives (4.0x3 + 3.0x4) / (3+4) = 3.43 GPA.

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA usually refers to a single semester's grade point average, while CGPA (Cumulative GPA) includes all semesters combined. Use the CGPA mode above to enter your previous cumulative GPA and credits, then add your current semester's subjects to see your updated cumulative result.

What is WAM and how is it different from GPA?

WAM (Weighted Average Mark) is common in Australian and some UK universities. Instead of converting marks to a 4.0 scale, WAM uses your actual percentage marks weighted by credit points. A WAM of 75 in an Australian university typically corresponds to a Distinction grade.

What GPA do I need for honours / cum laude?

This varies by institution, but common thresholds are: Summa Cum Laude 3.9+, Magna Cum Laude 3.7-3.89, Cum Laude 3.5-3.69. For Australian honours, a WAM of 80+ is usually required for First Class Honours. Always check your university's specific requirements.

Can I use this calculator for any university?

Yes. This calculator uses the standard US 4.0 grading scale for GPA/CGPA and percentage-based weighting for WAM. If your university uses a different scale (e.g. 5.0 or 7.0), you may need to convert your grades first.
