Frequently Asked Questions
How does the word counter work?
We split your text on whitespace and count each token as one word. Punctuation attached to a word (like commas or full stops) does not add an extra word. Counts update in real-time as you type or paste.
What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?
The Flesch Reading Ease score is a number between 0 and 100 that estimates how easy your text is to read. Higher scores mean easier reading. The formula considers average sentence length and average syllables per word. A score of 60-70 is considered standard for most audiences.
How accurate is the syllable count?
We use a vowel-group heuristic that is accurate for the vast majority of English words. Edge cases like silent letters or unusual loan words may be off by one syllable, but this does not significantly affect the readability score.
How many words should my essay be?
It depends on the assignment. A typical undergraduate essay is 1,500-2,500 words. Always check your brief or rubric for the required word count. Rubrica can help you check your assignment against the rubric before you submit.
Is my text stored or sent to a server?
No. All counting and analysis happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to our servers or stored anywhere.
Need feedback on your whole assignment?
Rubrica reads your brief, rubric, and assignment - then gives you criterion-by-criterion feedback before you submit.
